The Jonesboro Human Development Center..
Arkansas Department Of Human Services..Division Of Developmental Disabilities Services.
J.H.D.C. = Jonesboro Human Development Center.. What this is:
First let me say that my name is Valarie Helton and I am the president of the Volunteer council at the Jonesboro Human Development Center. It is located in Jonesboro, Arkansas on 4701 Colony Drive.
This is a residential place for the mentally disabled and handicapped people. The center offers training and many other much needed services such as a full nursing staff and skilled people who work here non stop around the clock making sure their needs are met. These people who work here are called LST'S ( life skills trainers) And they teach the individuals here how to do what comes normally for us like brushing our teeth every mealtime, combing our hair and getting dressed. These tasks seem so easy for us but is very hard for some of these individuals to accomplish.
Please Lend A Helping Hand
Your Helping hand is much needed !
Most of these people have no families who can visit them during Holidays or at special occasions such as a birthday and they don't get the gifts that most of us take for granted. They need friendships as well as cards and gifts on these special days. The State can only afford the food and housing with some clothing depending on need so therefore many do not get the personal attention which most of us share with our friends and families. So this is where you come in. If you can find it in your heart to send just one dollar, that is all, for the center to put aside to insure an individual will indeed get a card and some gifts when time arises. Then we can make sure all of our residents have a reason to keep going on knowing they are loved and cared for. Your one dollar added to the others can add up fast and then we can get enough to do what needs to be done. We would be so thankful and your donation is tax deductable. That is all we ask is one dollar to make someone's dream a reality.
The center has many projects it would like to finish. We are currently working on a walking track so the residents can get the needed exercise. We have a train that they can ride as entertainment but we still need the rest of the money to finish the tracks for it. We try to hold fund raisers but we don't get enough from them to actually complete a project so you see why this is so important to me and the center. But most of all to the people who live here.
What their day consist of :
At 6:00am the workers(LST'S) get the people up and teach them to get dressed if they are able. At 7:00am breakfast is served and they are taught to help themselves eat or they are fed depending on the problems one faces.8:00am they get their coats on or get ready to leave their house and go to the training facility which is where they learn job skills and other skills that are needed to fit in with society. At 11:00 they come back to the house for lunch, they are helped with brushing their teeth and then go back for afternoon training. At 3:00pm they start comming back to their house for an afternoon filled with arts and creative reading, music activities, or watch some TV. After 5:00pm they sit down for dinner and rest till bedtime. During the day some get to take trips out into the community to maybe do some shopping or take in a movie and sometimes get to eat out with a friend(mentor). All of this costs money. As you can see we are constantly busy helping and teaching throughout the day so that these individuals can have a normal quality type of life. They need your help to continue to have what everyone else seems to take for granted.
